St. Austin Catholic Parish Mixed-Use Parking Facility
This six-story mixed-use building includes retail space and parking for the St. Austin Catholic Church located just west of the University of Texas. Particular site requirements allow for dense building construction with no setbacks, except sidewalks to promote mixed-use programs that encourage pedestrian access. St. Austin leases out the first and second level retail space, and the parking garage serves the retail space and the church, which primarily relies on street parking.
The tight 60’x120’ lot required six split garage levels to achieve the desired number of spaces and retail requirements. The structure consists of a post-tensioned concrete system with two elevators, two concrete stairs, vertical aluminum plate fins on two facades providing full height solar shading, precast concrete elements, and a corrugated metal screening and signage element. The first level retail faces a 12-foot wide sidewalk protected by a cantilevered concrete slab canopy for solar shading and human scale. Lawrence Group provided complete architectural and engineering services from schematic design through construction administration.
