Al Jazeera America
New York, NY
Lawrence Group was hired for the design of newsroom and production facilities for Al Jazeera America, a 24 hour news operation and offshoot of Al Jazeera and Al Jazeera English. The program included control rooms, edit suites, and 150 workstations located in the historic New Yorker Hotel. The existing double-height, marble-clad lobby of the 1930’s Art Deco bank, vacant since 1979, is brought back to life as a light filled office loft. The design emphasizes the symmetry of the space, while new interventions of modernist elements and details complement the original detailing and ornament. An aggressive 7-week simultaneous design-construction schedule meant daily coordination meetings, phased document packages and around the clock construction was critical for the project’s success.
The project also includes a lobby and reception area that exemplifies the billion-dollar international corporation. Glossy whites, smoothly curved surfaces, and faceted walls are lit with gentle blue cove lights that create a welcome contrast to the loud city streets surrounding the project.
