Penn State Public Broadcasting and World Campus Building

University Park, PA

The technically sophisticated facility brings together Penn State’s WPSX/WPSU public broadcasting operations with Penn State’s web-based and continuing education initiatives. As both an operations center and headquarters, the facility accommodates highly technical production activities and engages the public in a variety of ways. On a prominent site in the Cubellis planned Penn State Innovation Park, the facility is home to the most public face of Penn State Outreach. The building’s organization was developed to encourage a strong symbiotic interrelationship between previously separate organizations.

A central atrium unites the building and allows visual access to the radio and television production facilities. An upper level main-street concept gathers together the creative staffs working on educational content development for both web-based applications and broadcast. Administrative offices for both organizations share conference areas, break rooms and a prominent central stair to enhance opportunities for interaction. The building’s systems support 24/7 operation and a highly flexible telecommunications infrastructure. Raised floors throughout provide data, power and air conditioning systems to open and enclosed offices. Lawrence Group provided architecture and interior design services as the broadcast facility architect for the architect of record.
