Al Jazeera America

Building headquarters for 24-hour news network

Overview

Challenge

For this 24-hour news operation, the renovation of its newsroom and production facilities needed to be completed within a 7-week schedule to accommodate Al Jazeera’s need to begin broadcasting before media rights and contracts were set to expire. The program included control rooms, edit suites, 150 workstations, lobby and reception area located in the historic New Yorker Hotel.

Solution

Collaboration was key to meeting this challenge. Design and construction processes were consolidated, and the architect, engineers, contractors and ownership group met on-site daily. Around the clock construction was critical to the project’s success.

The existing double-height, marble-clad lobby of the existing 1930’s Art Deco bank — vacant since 1979 — was brought back with a design emphasizing the symmetry of space and incorporating modernist elements and details to complement the original detailing.
