Touchette Regional Hospital Behavioral Health Unit
Touchette Regional Hospital needed to expand its inpatient mental health unit and outpatient behavioral health services to serve its growing population. One of the challenges for the design team was accommodating that growth on the constrained site.
The new behavioral health unit promotes staff and patient interaction with an open nurse station and strives to de-institutionalize the aesthetics through the use of materials and color. Defining separate intake processes for inpatient and outpatient programs was an important consideration during the project. To solve the site constraint challenge, the design team created an L-shaped addition, which also reduced the length of patient movement and created smaller controlled areas. The hospital was able to expand its inpatient program from 12 to 30 beds with potential for 46 beds in the future.
