John Burroughs School S.T.A.R. Building

Overview

Challenge

John Burroughs School was in need of upgrading its campus facilities, replacing two mid-century campus buildings with one new ground-up building. The vision set forth was to combine the Sciences, Library, Industrial Arts and Computer Science curriculum under one roof, while creating learning environments that are more conducive of current student learning styles.

Solution

Lawrence Group was commissioned to do programming and design for the new Science, Technology, and Research Building (S.T.A.R.). The building houses science labs (or clabs), independent research rooms, a library with collaborative study rooms, a makerspace, an auditorium, rooftop greenhouse, engineering labs, robotics and industrial design labs, as well as 3D printing. Intended to fit contextually within the campus, the new building frames the central quad and minimally impacts the serene campus landscape. The design for the building is targeting LEED® Silver Certification.
