Overview

Challenge

John Burroughs School challenged Lawrence Group to help them update the campus while maintaining their core values, rooted in liberal arts tradition. The existing campus had several Spanish Mission style buildings, but there was a lack of connectivity between the campus structures.

Solution

Lawrence Group integrated arts, athletics, academics, and activities into a communal academic environment. A new quadrangle is fronted by a new performing arts center, housing a 725-seat performance venue, a 100-seat black box, as well as dance, band, choral, and orchestra rooms. Adjacent, the student commons provides study and lounge space while lending an additional element of connectivity. A new 60,000-square-foot athletic center emulates the existing Spanish Mission style and features large, arched windows, detailed stucco exterior, and a clay tile roof. The facility includes a multi-level gymnasium to accommodate 1,200 visitors. The project is designed to meet LEED Silver certification.
