Overview

Challenge

In 2016, Lawrence Group collaborated with Principia College to create a Core Academic Facilities Plan including enhancements to the School of Nations, School of Government and Marshall Brooks Library. Addressed in the plan, the existing School of Government building suffered from aging systems, accessibility challenges and outdated programmatic constraints. Lawrence Group worked closely with Principia College leadership to design a facility that offers modern, flexible teaching and learning environments and enhance the overall user experience.

Solution

To address the aging building, the School of Government facility underwent a comprehensive transformation, including the removal of 12,000 square feet from the existing north structure and renovation of nearly 30,000 square feet of the existing south structure. A new addition also provides an improved entrance and accessibility to the facility.

To enhance the student experience, Lawrence Group’s design team created a welcoming, technology-rich learning environment. Flexible classrooms are equipped with state-of-the-art technology while common spaces throughout the building allow academic and social interaction. New glazing throughout the building maximizes energy efficiency and improves access to natural light, further enhancing the student and faculty experience.
