Challenge

Lawrence Group was selected to renovate and expand an existing 300-square-foot rooftop greenhouse into a duplex penthouse. Located on the upper west side in New York City, the project included enlarging the footprint of the apartment on two levels as well as adding an additional partial floor to the building to create the duplex apartment.

Solution

The planning strategy for this renovation and expansion was to invert the traditional stacking of a two- floor apartment and locate the bedrooms and private spaces on the lower level and place the open living spaces on the upper level. This design strategy gives the bedrooms access to the expansive open roof terrace and maximizes the views in the living spaces to the east with floor to ceiling retractable glass walls and spectacular views of Central Park.
